Second Sunday of Advent - The peace of God! - Isaiah 52:6-10 By Pastor Lee Hemen December 4, 2016 Last week we spoke of how the Messiah would be called by the names of Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. There were those who incorrectly thought that the Messiah would bring about the end of war or that everyone would find bliss. Interestingly, there are those in our day who still have misconceptions of who the Messiah is and the peace he brings. Isaiah introduces us to a Messiah who would bring peace to all mankind. He begins these verses by calling the nation of Israel to “Awake, awake, O Zion, clothe yourself with strength. Put on your garments of splendor, O Jerusalem, the holy city. The uncircumcised (ungodly) and defiled will not enter you again.” Jerusalem’s pagan conquerors — the uncircumcised and defiled — would never again invade and pollute the holy city after the Messiah came. Some have declared it only to be later disappointed by those who thwarted the peace process and who wanted war, disruption, or not sharing their favorite toy. When I have asked that question before I get all kinds of answers. However, if we were to look into the pages of Scripture we would find that the one overriding character quality that believers are to display far above all others that, in truth, all others flow from is: the peace of God. It is from this inner confidence that flows from our faith whereby joy, gentleness, and assurance are found. In fact, when you find a Christian that has difficulty with his fellow believers it is because they have no inner peace. They cannot let go and allow God to work in the lives of others. The Peace of God – Philippians 4:4-9 By Pastor Lee Hemen January 4, 2009 AM What advice do you remember from your parents? You know what I mean. Things like: Button your coat, wear your hat, say “please, thank-you, and you’re welcome.” All of these are great but there are deeper truths that are garnered from life as well. We learn to save for a “rainy day,” to be a little more like ants than grasshoppers, and to seek first God’s kingdom and his righteousness. During this coming new year, what advice will you follow? In a world of spiritual and physical strife we often do not find the spiritual serenity we seek. The reason is that we often depend upon ourselves instead of the wisdom and advice we find in God’s Word the Bible. In today’s passage we see several nuggets that if we take them to heart and act upon them in our lives we will find the peace of God we so desperately seek.
