Hannah – 1 Samuel 1:1-15 By Pastor Lee Hemen May 9, 2010 AM Do you ever struggle with prayer? What do you think is the nature of the struggle? One struggle is that we end up praying platitudes. How do we stop using the same old platitudes in our prayers? The Proverbist related, “Two things I ask of you, O LORD; do not refuse me before I die: Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread (Proverbs 30:7-8).” He had the right idea. Jesus said that part of our prayers should be, “your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread (Matthew 6:10-11).” One wonderful mother from the pages of the Old Testament can teach us a lot about prayer. Her name is Hannah. In fact, Hannah can teach us bunches about how mothers and the rest of us ought to pray and since this is Mother’s Day, we are going to pause our study of Mark’s gospel and study Hannah and her prayer.
