The Holy Life! -- James 1:22-27

The Holy Life! -- James 1:22-27 By Pastor Lee Hemen May 18, 2014 Some believe that global warming is the biggest threat to the world today. In fact, many of the major news organizations came out on Monday saying that the Antarctic is losing its ice sheet and “there is nothing we can do about it!” Yet, according to the National Snow and Ice Data, Antarctic ice is growing at a rapid pace never seen before. Some thought, in the 1970’s, that the greatest risk we faced was global cooling! Some thought we would all starve to death by the 1990’s and yet there are more crops being grown than ever in the history of mankind. Every year brings dire warnings of MERS, SARS, AIDS, the Nile Virus or some other disease that is going to wipe us off the face of the earth. Yet, as I look at mankind and especially the life of Christians today, I believe that the greatest global threat we face is ungodliness seen as a normal part of the Christian faith. The holy life is no longer seen as hip or something o...

Worthy Things In Life - Philippians 4:8-9

Worthy Things In Life - Philippians 4:8-9 By Pastor Lee Hemen July 12, 2009 AM Émile Coué introduced us to the psychobabble of the mantra of self-impression that “Every day, in every way, I'm getting better and better.” It was a type of autosuggestion. The Coué method centers on a routine repetition of this particular expression according to a specific ritual, no matter your physical wellbeing and in the absence of any sort of associated mental imagery, you repeat it to yourself at the beginning and at the end of each day. In other words, you stand in front of the mirror, look at yourself, and remind yourself that in “Every day, in every way, I'm getting better and better.” In doing so it does not matter how you feel, what is occurring, or what the day is like; you are “getting better and better.” The idea is that a positive state of mind comes from a positive state of mind. Does it work? Perhaps, until you blow it or prove that in fact everyday in every way you are not getting...

Holy Living -- Colossians 3:1-17

Holy Living – Colossians 3:1-17 by Pastor Lee Hemen April 13, 2008 AM My mother had favorite expressions she would use when she caught us doing something we were not supposed to be doing. Sometimes she would declare, “What in God’s green earth do you think you are doing? or she would ask us, “In the name of all that is holy, what in the world are you up to?” I am not sure exactly what she meant by either of these. Maybe she felt that at that moment we were up to something unholy or that God’s green earth could not survive? Trying to do the right things that would not bring about these inquiries from my mother could be at times kind of tough. Living holy lives for the Lord is sometimes better said than done in the lives of Christians as well. This is especially true in a world that not only promotes ungodly living, but encourages it as being “normal.” Paul gave the Colossian church the answer they needed in order to live holy lives for God through Jesus Christ. What he related to them c...
